CHINUA ACHEBE
Chinua Achebe was born in 1930 in Ogidi, Nigeria, and educated at presidential term College, Umuahia; University College, Ibadan; and London University. After studying
broadcasting at the BBC, he worked as a writer for the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation and as the founder and director of Voice of Nigeria. His first novel, Things Fall isolated (1958), quickly established him as the most widely discussed contemporary
African novelist. This modern classic was followed by No Longer at Ease (1960),
Arrow of God (1964), and A Man of the stack (1966). He has also written three
books for childrenChike and the River (1966), The Flute (1978), and The Drum
(1978); two volumes of poesyBeware, Soul Brother, and Other Poems (1971) and
Christmas in Biafra, and Other Poems (1973); and two collections of essaysMorning
yet on Creation Day (1975) and Hopes and Impediments (1988). His short stories
have been composed in The Sacrificial Egg, and Other Stories (1962) and Girls at War
(1973). Achebe has been a enceinte spokesman for his own Igbo people, who tried to
secede from Nigeria to form the independent republic of Biafra. His most recent novel,
Anthills of the Savannah (1987), was nominated for the Booker Prize.
